If I attended my history classes well, it was Mangal Pandey who revolted against the East India company and was one of the pioneers. You may choose to differ.
I strongly feel by segragating on grounds of states/language/region you are on the way of repeating the same mistakes which brought us under the tragic rule of Britishers (Divide & rule). We were the said to be illitearte & unaware then. but sadly, your post makes me realize that a section of the literate society is still creeping under such foolish notions - and so are actually uneducated. Article of this kind is against the interest of the nation & Sir nothing comes above India, neither Maharashtra nor U.P/Bihar. So my learned friend think before you write such articles as these may judge the future of the coming generations which should not be irrigated with a feeling of superiority, jealousy or regionalism. Hope that helps you understand the gravity of the matter.

Mangal Pandey was a spontaneous revolt. Marathas have lead organized Freedom Movements. it was Marathas who though suffered heavy losses stopped Afgans from taking over India otherwise you could imagine what could have happened to India. We all would have been tying up Bomb Belts. make no mistake British didn't occupied entiire India, they occupied only those parts which were critical for them to do Business. Britishers wuld not have fought with Afgans and would have left India to Afgan's mercy and you could imagine what consequences it would have. This era of Marathas is taught very vaguely in History Books. Ranjit Singh is a given a very passing by reference in History Books.

People will curse me but it is a Congressi trick . Nehru believed in that "Majority communalism is more dangerous than Minority Communalism" and thats why Hindus need to be overburdened with Inferiority Complex, divided on caste/region/language etc etc.

If this era of Histiry was taught well, people would have a different perception of Maharashtra and may be India as a whole. Some how how Governments always wanted to show that we were only constant loosers.

Funny thing about Hindus is they love to divide themselves on all possible basis and have all the kind of divisions among them on basis of caste/region/language/food habits, but no war was ever fought on the basis of caste/language/region. it was always based on ego of some local ruler. There was never ever a Thakur versus Dalit war . But we give these differences too much importance.

Time is to rise above these petty differences and move forward together.

To let you know what experts think about Mangal Pandey just an excerpt from an article "Accidental hero or a forgotten martyr?"

Mangal Pandey was the first sepoy under the British East India company to protest, as it went against the religion of Hindus and Muslims respectively. He was arrested, put on trial and finally hanged on April 8, 1857. His death sparked off the First war of Independence, earlier termed as the Sepoy Mutiny by British historians.

According to Prof Swapan Bhattacharya, August 15, 1947, is an evident result of the sepoy mutiny that broke out in 1857. Sepoy mutiny achieved the greatest transformation—the governance of India went directly under the British crown from the hands of the East India Company—and from 1861 the Indians got an opportunity to participate in the governance, which later manifested in the concept of swaraj and gradually evolved into a demand for absolute independence.

I dont deny Maharashtra's or for that matter any states contribution. everyone fought for their rights and freedom and they won only when they were united. Castes are miniature form of regionalism where people were given regions of a province to live in as community. So why are we now trying to repeat same mistakes at an even larger scale. Lets stay united and we undoubtedly rule the world.

So of all thats has been said so far, i only agree with your concluding line :
"Time is to rise above these petty differences and move forward together"
